1 Sally Jones
2	Having been duly sworn, was examined and testified as
  3	follows:
  4	By MR. JOHNSON.
5 Q	State your name for the record,
  6	please?
  7 A	Sally Jones.
8 Q	Is the miss or Mrs. Jones?
  9 A	Mrs.
10 Q	Mrs. Jones, what is your present
 11	occupation?
 12 A	I'm a freelance reporter with Flying
 13	Fingers Reporting Services.
14 Q	It is my understanding, Mrs. Jones,
 15	that Flying Fingers Reporting
16	Services has recently purchased a
 17	ProCAT computer aided transcription
 18	system, is that correct?
 19 A	Yes.
20 Q	Have you had a chance to familiarize
21	yourself with the ProCAT system?
 22 A	Yes.
23 Q	What some of the ProCAT's features?
24 A	First of all, ProCAT is an easy to
25	use, menu driven system which allows

1	the operator to select many features
2	with a single key stroke.
3 Q	Lets back up a moment, Mrs. Jones.
4	Can you explain, for those of us not
  5	quite as knowledgable about
6	computers, what a menu is and how it
  7	works?
8 A	Sure. A menu is a list from which
9	you choose a particular function.
10	First, your menu might give you a
 11	choice of a translating a job,
12	dictionary maintenance or editing a
 13	transcript.
14	You choose which function you would
15	like to do an the menu takes you
 16	into that particular process.
17 Q	All right. Suppose I have decided
18	to edit a document and I have
19	selected the edit function on the
 20	main menu. What's next?
21 A	The document you chose to edit
22	appears on the screen and you then
23	have the opportunity to change
 24	punctuation, move paragraphs, delete
25	or insert words or lines, resolve

1	conflicts and do a function called
  2	global replace.
3 Q	What is global replace?
4 A	Global replace means taking a string
5	of words or one word in the
6	transcript an replacing it with
7	another. First, you might go
8	through and edit a transcript and
9	then decide that you should have
10	spelled a name such as Francis with
11	a E instead of an I. You simply go
12	into the global at replace mode and
13	tell the computer to find every
14	occurrence of Frances an change the
 15	to Francis.
16 Q	Thank you, Mrs. Jones. That's all
17	the questions I have for now
 18 Mr. Johnson: Your witness
 19	By Mr. Smith:
20 Q	Mrs. Jones, my name is Mike Submit.
21	Have you ever had your deposition
 22	taken before?
 23 A	No.
24 Q	Can you tell us how the computer
25	converts your steno outlines into

-3-

  1	English?
2 A	The computer contains what is called
3	your personal dictionary. As you
4	probably know, every reporter writes
5	a little different that the next
6	person. Therefore by building your
7	own personal dictionary you're able
8	to put your own unique strokes into
9	the dictionary. You can also build
10	what is called a job dictionary,
11	inserting words that might be used
12	only in a particular job, such as
 13	medical terminology, etc.
14 Q	Can you tell us a little about the
15	Stack translation feature of ProCAT?
16 A	Yes. Stack translation enables you
17	to put several jobs into the the
18	computer to translate while you're
19	doing something else, such as taking
20	another job, printing a transcript,
21	or doing your grocery shopping.
22 Q	Are you saying that you can print a
23	transcript at the same time as
 24	you're doing another function?
25 A	Yes. I can print one job while I'm

-4-

1	editing another, or print one job
  2	while I'm translating another.
3 Q	Well, that certainly is very
4	impressive to me. Thank you Mrs.
  5	Jones
