 PCMCIA DIRECT READ INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Your Flash writer stores notes on a PC-Card (A.K.A. PCMCIA card or stenocard).  The notes that are stored on a card are in one of two formats.  Flash version Cb cards must be read via a serial cable that is attached to a stenocard reader.  A newer version of Flash (version D7) firmware enables you to read your notes using a PC-Card slot in your computer.

The process of implementing the direct read function in your computer requires that you first upgrade your Flash to version D7, then add the following command lines to your CONFIG.SYS file.

You can determine the Flash revision number by pressing and holding down the mode key for three seconds.  The version number appears at the upper right corner of your LCD screen.

These instructions only apply to Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows 98 Second Edition.

Please follow the instructions listed below to configure your computer for direct read function.

  1. Click on the Start button

  2. Click on Run, then type "SYSEDIT" in the text box

  3. Press Enter; this will bring up Autoexec.bat and Config.sys.

  4. Click on the title bar which says “c:\config.sys” to bring it to the foreground.

  5. You must examine the content of the config.sys file to look for references made to "cardsoft" or "cardworks."  In front of any line which has these commands, add a “REM”, making sure to leave a space between “REM” and the word which follows it.

  6. On a blank line, add the following lines to your config.sys file

    device=c:\windows\system\csmapper.sys
    device=c:\windows\system\carddrv.exe /slot=1

    Note:  Typically slot=1,  in the above command, refers to the bottom slot in your computer.  You may change the slot number to .../slot=2 if you would like to use the upper PCMCIA slot

  7. Save and close the file.

  8. Restart the computer.

Follow the instructions in your User Manual to set up the read utility for reading in the notes from a card.

NOTE:  The above quotation marks are not to be included in your entries; they are included here for clarity.
