How do I know how much space is left on my CF card?

It is a good practice to examine the Stylus status window when you power on the writer to determine if you have enough space and battery life to operate your writer without interruptions.

Tap on the status drop-down window to reveal the writer status.  The available space appears as a percentage of the total disk size.  Make certain there is at least 5% free space for realtime only or 10% free space for realtime with audio recording.  Keep in mind that space requirements increase by nearly 10 times when you Stylus has been configured to record audio in addition to steno, and text.  We strongly recommend using a higher capacity card for this purpose.

It is also important to note that you may not remove a CF card from your Stylus when it is powered on.  You are guaranteed to corrupt your card or damage the files on it if a card is removed while Stylus is writing to it.  This is no different than the technology in your digital camera.

Follow the following procedures to safely replace a card in your Stylus and to ensure the integrity of the data on your cards:

  • Stop the proceeding at earliest possible moment (within a few minutes).
  • Turn off the Stylus writer.
  • Remove the full CF card from the card slot.
  • Insert a formatted CF card into the card slot.
  • Turn on the power to your Stylus.
